Drainage
System of river in India is called drainage. According to origin drainage system will be categories in two way.
- Himalayan River System

The Himalayan River System
- The Himalayan Rivers are the typical example of Antecudent drainage.
The Indus River System
Indus river rises near Mansarovar Lake from the Glacier of the Kailas Range in western Tibet (31 15 N and 81 40 E) at an elevation of 5182 metre.
Tributaries- Gilgit, Gortang, Dras, Shinger, Hunza
The Jhelum
It rises in a spring at verinag at an altitude of 4900m in the south-eastern part of Kashmir valley.
Tributaries-Lidar, The Sincl: Pohru, Which rises in Kashmir.
Chenub
It is originated from the near baralacha pass in the Lahul-spiti Part of the Zaskar Range.
Ravi
It has source in kullu hills near the Rohtange Pass in Himanchal Pradesh.
The Beas
It is originated near the Rohtange pass on the Southern end of the PirRanjal Range.
The Satluj-
Rises from the Mansarovar- Raken lakes near DamaRass in western Tibet.
The Ganga River System
The Ganga River System consist ganga river and it’s all tributaries. The River ganga originated as Bhagirathi from the Gangotri Glacier in Uttarakhashi district of Uttarakhand at an elevation of 7010m.
It bifurcates itself into Bhagirathi- Hugali in west Bangal and Padma-Megha in Bagladesh.
The Yamuna
(It is the largest and the most important tributaries of Ganga)
It is originated from yamunotri glacier on the Bandaspunch peak in gaswal in Uttarakhand.
Tributaries of Yamuna- Chambal, The Sind, The Betwa and Ken
The Chambal-
It is rises 15km South-west of Mhow in the high land of Janapas hill in the vindhya Range in Madhya Pradesh.
Chambal join Yamuna in etawah district in Uttar Pradesh.
The Banas in an important tributaries of Chambal. It originated in the Southern part of the Aravali Range and join Chambal near sawaiMadhopur. The Sind originated in vidishputeau of Madhya Pradesh.
The Betwa rises in Bhopal district and join Yamuna near Hamirpur. The Ken river rising from the Basner range of Madhya Pradesh and join Yamuna near chila.
The Son River-
The Sin river springs from the Amarkantak Plateau
Important Tributaries
Johilla, The Gopat, The Rihand , The Kanhar, North Kod.
The Damodar-
It rises in the hill of the Chhota Nagpur Plateau
It is called sorrow of Bengal.
The Ramganga-
It rises in the gashwal district of UK.
The Ghaghra-rises originates near the guslamandhata peak. South of Mansarovar in Tibet. The Kali river rises in the high glacier of snow covered region of the Trans-Himalya.
The Gandak-
It is originated near the Tibet-Nepal Border. The BashiGandak originated from the western slope of Sumesur hill near India-Nepal Border.
The Kosi-
It is called Supt Kaushiki.
Mamare, SutKosi, TombaKosi, Talkhakosi, DhoodhKoshi, BatiaKosi and Arun and Tamber.
It is called sorrow of Bihar.
The Brahmaputra River System-
Brahmaputra river rises near Chenayangdung- glacier is Kailash range of Himalaya a little south of Lake Kenggyu.
The Peninsular Drainage
Major water fall is peninsular India
The Jog- Sharvati, Yenna- Mahabale washer sivasmundram (101m)àCaveri
Gokak- Gakak (55m), Kapildhara (23m) and Dhuandar (15)à Narmada
The Peninsular River systems
- The Mahanadi, The Godavari, The Krishna, The Caveri flow south-east into Bay of Bengal
- Narmada and Tapi flow into Arabian sea. River system can be divided into two way-
- East Flowing river
- West flowing river
The Flowing River-
The Mahanadi originate in the northern foothill of Dandakarunga near sihawa in Raipur district of Chhatisgarh.
- The Godavari rises in the Trimbak Plateau of north Sahyadri near Nashik in Maharastra
- The Manjra rises from Jamkhed hill in Central Maharastra.
- The Penganga rises from the Buldana Range,
- Krishna rises is western ghat just to north of Mahabaleshwar.
- The Cavery rises in Brahmagiri range of hill in western ghat (Courg plateau Karnataka)
- The Subarrekha originated from the Ranchi plateau is Jharkhand.
The West flowing River
The Major West flowing river are Narmada and Tapi.
The Narmada rises from the western flank of the Amarkantak plateau about elevation of 1057m in Shahdol district of Madhya Pradesh.
Tapi
Rises from Multionsatpura plateau in Betul district of Madhya Pradesh.
Sabarmatirises hill of mewar in Arawali Range.
Inland Drainage
The Ghaggar is the most important river of Inland drainage from boundary between Hariyana and Punjab.
- The Ravi drains area between the pirPanjal and the DhaolaDhar Range.
- It enter Punjab plains near madhopur and leters Pakistan 26km below Amritsar.
- The Beas:
The Beas originated near the Rohtang pass at a height of 4062m above sea level on the southern end of the pirpanjal range.
The Satluj:
The Satluj rises from the Mansorovar lakes near dama pass in western Tibet at a ht of 4570m within 80km of the source of the indus. (Bhakradom has been car trusted)
Ganga River System
Ganga originated as Bhagirathi from the Ganga tri glacier in Uttar Kashi. District of UK at on elevation of 7010m.
- It bifurcate itself into
Bhagirathi-Hugli in west Bengal and Padma-Meghna in Bangladesh.

Bonas- the Banas is an important tributary of the Chambal. It originated in southern part of the Aravali Range and takes. A north-eastern course to join the Chambal near swaimadhopur.
